Lois Hong was born in China and spent much of her childhood in Germany. After finishing her nine-year compulsory education in China, she set off for New Zealand to study - bouncing between the three countries.
While working on her degree at Auckland University, life threw a curveball at her, forcing her to take a break from school. During that time, she dove into self-study in psychology and rebuilt herself by tapping into her subconscious (and probably having a few “aha” moments along the way). She started Alpine climbing and volunteering teaching in Tibet and Nepal - kickstarting her lifelong journey of self-discovery.
Her first professional gig was at Siemens, but she soon found that the typical 9-to-5 grind and endless promotions weren’t exactly her cup of tea. So, she left that safe, high-paying job and co-founded two start-ups aimed at helping small businesses and freelancers with website building, digital marketing, co-working spaces, and management. Since then, she’s been on a mission to help people build their personal brands and grow their online businesses from scratch.
Since 2014, Lois has been jet-setting between China and New Zealand for both love and business. After a six-month world trip in 2016, she dug deeper into her inner self and decided to dive into the creative realms of photography and filmmaking. Before long, she stepped away from her leadership role in China to focus on exploring mindfulness psychology and innovative work - sometimes you have to leave your comfort zone to find the real treasures.
In 2017, she began writing articles and publishing content on her public WeChat platform, “LoisHong.Com,” which has since captivated hundreds of thousands of followers. In 2018, while working on a documentary about homosexuality, she teamed up with Chinese LGBTQ+ advocates to launch the first Chinese LGBTQ+ nonprofit in New Zealand - a pioneering effort to create a more diverse and inclusive environment.
By 2019, Hong had embraced a truly global lifestyle, dedicating herself to sharing positive energy and creating value through her creative work. Then in 2020, after a challenging breakup from a long-term relationship, she made some bold moves - selling her New Zealand property and following a whisper from her subconscious that led her back to Alpine climbing. Along the way, she began shooting documentaries about climbers and, even amidst the chaos of COVID-19, combined her mindfulness expertise with over a decade of digital business know-how to create online video courses that help people find fulfilment, happiness, and freedom.
Post-pandemic, in 2021, she began making annual pilgrimages to the Himalayan region - driven by a love for music, film, the people, and those magnificent mountains. There, she started playing music in the wild, sharing the energy and love of the mountains with everyone she met.
And then, in 2024, a six-year friendship magically transformed into a love story, all thanks to the power of music. Teaming up with her music partner Xueshan, she launched the music documentary channel “Himalala.” Together, they busk, explore the world, play tunes, and spread love wherever they go - because sometimes, all you need is a little music and a lot of heart.
